Elvis Presley Songs
The story has been repeated thousands of times, with minor variations, in magazines, books, blogs and documentaries. In some versions, the heartbroken man shoots himself; in others, he leaps to his death from a hotel window. There are occasional references to a failed romance and to the destruction of all traces of identification before the fatal act. And yet, no one has ever turned up the article, or even provided much clarifying detail. I mean, there would be no Beatles, there would be no Hendrix. There would be no Dylan.
Durden brought the article to his friend and cowriter Mae Boren Axton. When Mae first met Elvis, she felt he had everything he needed to become a star except a hit song. With that flash of inspiration, the pair was off and running. But in later years, Axton insisted that the shared credit was her promise made good to help Elvis buy a house in Florida for his parents. Axton took a demo of the song to Elvis while he was on the road. His reaction was immediate.

The single topped Billboard ' s Top chart for seven weeks, Cashbox ' s pop singles chart for six weeks, was No. Presley had first performed "Heartbreak Hotel" during a live show in December during a tour of the Louisiana Hayride , but the song gained strong popularity after his appearance on Stage Show in March It became a staple of Presley's repertoire in live appearances, last performed by him on May 29, , at the Civic Center in Baltimore, Maryland. A rock and roll standard , since its original release "Heartbreak Hotel" has been covered by several rock and pop acts, including Willie Nelson and Leon Russell , who recorded a duet version that topped the Country charts in The song was written in , by Mae Boren Axton , a high school teacher with a background in musical promotion, and Jacksonville based singer—songwriter Tommy Durden.
Police found only the note in one of his pockets. In Gainesville , songwriter-musician Tommy Durden thought the line in the note resonated the blues and would make a great lyric in a song. He sought the opinion of his friend Mae Boren Axton, who was a local songwriter, TV personality, and publicist. Axton had once done some work for Colonel Tom Parker, and she suggested that they write the song for Elvis Presley. As the story goes, she had once told Elvis that she was going to write his first million seller. After Mae decided that "down at the end of Lonely Street " one would naturally find a "Heartbreak Hotel," the rest of the song was composed by the team within the hour.
