How to Start Writing a Book: A Peek Inside One Writer’s Process
Ask The Expert. I have been told over and over by professional people, after they hear some of my life story, that I should write a book about my life. I was born in Jerusalem. My father and uncle were involved in the 6 day war, and my uncle a member of the PFLP was sentenced to years in prison. Long story there. We moved to the USA in and my father ran the home with an iron fist, became a gang member, and did all that comes along with that life style. He also went to prison for many years.

1. Think about who is going to read your story
Three months ago I started writing a memoir. This story has been hiding in my brain for the last decade, percolating without me knowing it. Long story short, back in middle school I started dating a guy and it turned into a seven-year, mildly abusive relationship. A decade after it ended, I realized the microscopic hooks that found their way into my veins so long ago were still part of me today. Three months ago, I woke up. Do I start at the beginning of the story and end at the end?

Many people have a story to tell. If you are just writing for your family, that story might be different than if you were writing your story to be read by the general public. If your life was a harsh one you may not want to include the real names of the people involved. You may also want to consider whether your life story could be written as fiction. Write down everything you can think of that you want to include in your life story. Write scenes of your life that you want to include in your story on different sheets of paper or index cards. This is one place I recommend using the old-fashioned way of writing by using pen and paper.
