The Twelve Dancing Princesses by Ruth Sanderson

This is a tale that always intrigued me, so I look for the unique detail in each version I read. I really appreciate that, in this one, theres a subplot about the princes who had been trying to solve the mystery. And I appreciate that this is probably the most gorgeously illustrated version. But Michael doesnt seem to do anything to earn the help of the crone... so, unfortunately, its not perfect. Still I do recommend it for those of you who love the tale or who love sumptuous paintings of princesses & forests....

The Twelve Dancing Princesses

Its closest analogue is the Scottish Kate Crackernuts , where it is a prince who is obliged to dance every night. Charles Deulin collected another, French version in his Contes du Roi Cambrinus , which he credited to the Grimm version. Twelve princesses , each more beautiful than the last, sleep in twelve beds in the same room. Every night, their doors are securely locked by their father. But in the morning, their dancing shoes are found to be worn through as if they had been dancing all night. The king , perplexed, asks his daughters to explain, but they refuse. The king then promises his kingdom and each daughter to any man who can discover the princesses' midnight secret within three days and three nights, but those who fail within the set time limit will be sentenced to death.
